Ahmedabad Set for Global Glory: To Host 2030 Commonwealth Games’ 100th Year Edition

Ahmedabad Set for Global Glory

The Commonwealth Games (CWG) will return to India after 20 years, with Ahmedabad set to host the games in 2030. They will be confirmed as the host nation on 26th November.

Ahmedabad is set for a big honour as the iconic city in the Indian state of Gujarat is set to host the 2030 edition of the Commonwealth Games (CWCG) after the executive board of the Commonwealth Sport recommended the Indian city over Nigeria’s Abuja, Nigeria.

Ahmedabad will be confirmed as the host of the quadrennial games on 26th November at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow after the city’s name is put forward to the full Commonwealth Sport membership.

The 2036 edition will mark a big occasion as it will be the centenary edition of the quadrennial games, meaning the 100th anniversary of the first-ever edition, which took place in 1930 at Hamilton, Canada.

This will mark the CWG returning to India after 20 years. The country will host the multi-national event for the second time after the 2010 edition, when Delhi hosted the mega event.

Meanwhile, this also marks the start of India’s grand sporting ambitions, with Ahmedabad also trying to host the 2036 Olympics. India has never hosted the Olympic Games before.

Apart from the 2010 CWG, India has hosted just two major multi-sports events, which were also both held in New Delhi, which hosted the first-ever Asian Games in 1951 as well as the same competition in 1982.

PT Usha, Sports Minister, CWG President React.

“It would be an extraordinary honour for India to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in Amdavad. The Games would not only showcase India’s world-class sporting and event capabilities, but also play a meaningful role in our national journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047. We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth,” said Indian sporting legend PT Usha, who is the President of the Commonwealth Games Assocation India as well as Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

“It is a big boost to the Union Government’s vision of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. We successfully staged the World Para Athletics Championship recently in New Delhi with the participation of over 2200 athletes and support staff from 100-plus nations, drawing praise from International Paralympic Committee president Andrew Parsons and top international athletes. In the last decade, the country has not only developed world-class sports infrastructure but through policy changes, sports science and financial support we are on a fast-paced road to transforming India into a nation of champions,” Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Sports Minister said.

“Bharat takes another giant leap in the global sporting arena! The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport has recommended Ahmedabad, India, as the proposed host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games! This shining acknowledgment reflects India’s world-class infrastructure, hospitality & thriving sports ecosystem. A proud moment that brings the world closer to Bharat’s vibrant heart!,” Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, Raksha Nikhil Khadse posted on social media

“We are grateful to both India and Nigeria for the vision and commitment they have shown in developing proposals to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Both proposals were inspiring, reflecting the scale of opportunity within our Commonwealth family. The Executive Board has carefully considered the Evaluation Committee’s findings and is recommending Amdavad to our membership. This is a significant milestone for the Movement as we look to our Centenary Games, and we now look ahead to the General Assembly in Glasgow where our members will make the final decision.

“The Board were impressed with the vision and ambition of Nigeria’s proposal and were united in our commitment to continue working with their team to explore future hosting opportunities. This decision reflects our determination to take the Commonwealth Games to the African continent,” said Donald Rukare the interim president of Commonwealth Sports.

Ahmedabad’s Grand Sporting Plans

The world’s largest cricket stadium is present at Ahmedabad, with the Narendra Modi Stadium at the centre of it. The ground with a capacity of 1,30,000 is likely to host the opening and closing ceremonies. Although a confirmation on the same will only come once India gets the offical nod to host the games.

Around the iconic venue, a multi-sport facility is being built, known as the Sardar Patel Enclave, which is currently under construction. The arena will have a seperate football stadium, an athletes’ village, tennis arena, an aquatics center, and a multi-sport indoor stadium.

Meanwhile, the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex was inaugurated earlier this year, which is described as the largest in the country.
